The art of leather marbling has roots all around the world, but particularly in Japan. There, it is known as “Suminagashi”, or “Floating ink”.
The process consists of dripping special inks in to treated water to enable them to float. With careful manipulation using a marbling comb, I swirl and brush the colours around each other to create whimsical, paisley-like patterns. I then dip natural vegetable tanned leather on to the marbling, capturing the delicate pattern on the material.
The results are that each earring, pouch and headband are one of a kind. The marbling they display has been carefully crafted to accentuate the beauty of this ancient technique!
I hope you'll find some special marbled earrings for yourself- each a one-of-a-kind piece of art to wear with you to jazz up any outfit!
I made these to celebrate a passion of mine- ukuleles! Wear these to your next concert or jam, and you’re bound to stand out in the pit!
